The Cygnus Spaceworks Alpha-class Starwing, also known as the Xg-1 Starwing or Assault Gunboat, was one of the Galactic Empire’s first general deployment starfighters to be equipped with deflector shields and a hyperdrive.

It was based on a tri-wing design similar to the Lambda-class shuttle, another craft designed by Cygnus Spaceworks for the Empire.  Unlike the shuttle however, the starwing sported a second set of wings to increase its maneuverability.

Its armament consisted of two chin mounted laser cannons, two ion cannons above the cockpit and a pair of general purpose warhead launchers.  The Starwing could also carry a tractor beam projector to be used as a weapon.

The standard payload for the Alpha-class Starwing was sixteen concussion missiles, eight per launcher, though depending upon the mission the Star Wing could alternatively carry twelve proton torpedoes, eight heavy rockets, or four heavy space bombs.  Some even carried ion torpedoes.

The starwing’s hyperdrive and deflector shield capability meant that it did not need the support of a Star Destroyer or other starfighter carrier.  Therefore its role within the Imperial Navy was toward being utilized as a starfighter for conducting hyperspace raids against convoys and space stations, and also serving in a reconnaissance capacity for imperial navy fleets.  The ion capabilities of the starwing also made it an ideal choice for capture operations or planetary customs duties.  While the high magazine capability simultaneously made it a deadly bomber.  A squadron of starwings could penetrate most medium-sized capital ships’ shields with a single warhead salvo from each fighter.
